Friend Residence is located in historic part of Hingham, Massachusetts. The client’s desire was to update the house to support today more informal living style, while at the same time keeping the historic integrity and exterior appearance of the building’s original time.

The addition and historic preservation included reworking the layout of existing house and incorporating the barn into the addition for completing the design intent as a whole. The addition includes a open working kitchen with a large island, six burner gas stove, and custom cooking fireplace. Right behind the wall is entire preparation kitchen. Addition also included family room with walkout to a big deck that connects to redesigned existing guest bedroom. The existing small kitchen and breakfast room was redesigned as dining room and small media room. The addition also includes a connection to the barn with a mud room.

The construction of the addition is a post and beam structure to maximize open space, with custom roof trusses that are covered with SIP panels to maximize insulation factor. Exterior details and materials have been designed to match the existing house and barn as well as meet the strict requirements of the Hingham Historical Committee.
